Chuck McGinnis Barber Shop

(Est. in 1917)

Excerpt from Albert Campbell's obituary in the January 25, 1951 California Democrat:

Mr. Campbell was born in Schuyler County, December 16, 1890, a son of Walter and Emma Campbell. He came with his parents to Moniteau County when he was one year old.

On Sept. 29, 1910 he married Miss Minnie Bybee of Moniteau County. They lived on a farm ten miles south of town. In 1917 they moved to town where he engaged in the barber business. In 1923 Mr. Campbell sold his barber shop to W. L. Byler and he was employed by A. B. Cole and Sons for a year and the bought back half interest in the shop with Byler in 1924. In 1926 Byler sold his interest to Clyde Sappington and Campbell had continued their partnership in the barber shop for 25 years at the time of Mr. Campbell's death.

Sappington Sells Barber Shop

Will Continue Part Time Work

Clyde Sappington has announced in this issue of the paper that he has sold his barber shop to Luther Garnett of King City.

Sappington, who is widely knows throughout this area, has been engaged as a barber in California for the past 28 years, and is believed to have remained in the same location longer than any business in the uptown district.

Sappington was born on a farm south of California and in 1907 moved to High Point where he was engaged in farming until 1924. In that year he moved to Kansas City and entered the Moler Barber College. After spending a year in Kansas City he returned to California and in March 1925, he bought out W. L. Byler, who at that time was a partner of Albert Campbell. Sappington and Campbell continued to operate the shop until Campbell's death in January 1951. Since that time Sappington had operated the shop alone.

Sappington, who is an active gardener, plans to continue to work part time at the shop and to devote time to farming lands that he owns south of California.

Luther Garnett, who was born in Know County, is a veteran of World War II having served with the 9th Division of the army in Europe. He is a graduate of the Moler Barber College in Kansas City and has been living at King City prior to buying out Sappington.

He is married to the former Dorothy Gander of Bunceton and they have three children, Marilyn, six, Carolyn, five, and David, three.

The Garnetts have rented an apartment above the Uptown Cleaners and expect to move from King City soon.

In a message from Chuck McGinnis he said he went to work for Luther Garnett in October 1999 and purchased the barber shop January 4, 2000.
