Newkirk Cemetery listings

Newkirk cemetery is located southeast of Tipton and east of Fortuna, just to the south of Hwy W. It is located south of the Moreau River and north of Smith Fork creek and contains over 400 known burials.

Inscriptions were originally read by the Latter Day Saints of Jefferson City. They were re-copied and notes added to assist researchers by Omega Charles Hutchison.

James Albin updated and made corrections to these listings in 2005. Pictures were taken in March 2007.

There are at least 10 Civil War veterans buried here.

The earliest burial was Margaret Newkirk in 1839 and there are 4 people with pre-1800 birth dates.

Directions to cemetery: From Tipton, go south on Hwy 5 until reaching the intersection with Rt W. Turn left (east) and travel until coming to Maupin Road. Turn right (south) until coming to the intersection with Newkirk Rd. Turn right (also south) and the cemetery will be a short distance on the right.

From Latham, go west on Rt W, turn left on Maupin Rd, right on Newkirk Rd. and the cemetery will be a short distance on the right.

As we leaf through the pages of the Newkirk cemetery, let us keep in mind that all these Newkirk's derive from Tunis and Catherine Drake Newkirk who came to Moniteau County, Missouri from Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky around 1836. Tunis' home was near the Newkirk cemetery and all his sons homesteaded and bought land near here. It was known as the Newkirk settlement.

Tunis and Catherine had five sons, (1) Charles, (2) Drake, (3) David and (4) Harrison all buried in this cemetery and (5) Peter. Peter is buried a mile southeast in the Peter Newkirk cemetery on the land he homesteaded.

Tunis' daughter's were (1) Jemima, who married Thomas Bowen; (2) Rosann, who married William G Howard; (3) Elizabeth, who married Hugh Stewart; and (4) Sarah who married John McPherson.

Jemima (03 Mar 1797 - 26 Jan 1846) is believed to be buried here in an unmarked grave. Rosann is buried here and it is unknown where Elizabeth is buried. Sarah Newkirk McPherson is buried in the McPherson family cemetery, several miles to the north of Newkirk cemetery.

Most of Tunis' children were married before they came on a wagon train to Missouri. Jemima's husband, Thomas Bowen, died in Indiana in 1833 before they reached Missouri.

Tunis was in his seventies when he came and only lived long enough to see his family settle down in this rather wild country. All that remains today to show the Newkirk's first home is this Newkirk cemetery and the Peter Newkirk family cemetery just a mile to the southeast.

In the spring of 1836 a group of families left their homes in Louisville, Kentucky, in covered wagons to homestead in Missouri. The wagons were so heavily loaded that the women took turns walking. This group included the Newkirk's, Asa Drake and his bride, the Thixton's, the Buzan's, and the Fount Hays families, many of whom are buried here in Newkirk cemetery.

Floyd and Irene Thixton and their father, W R Thixton, were buried in one grave. They all died 27 October 1919. W R had gone to the Westview school to pick up the children as it had been raining hard. As they crossed a small stream of water the wagon and team were washed downstream. Blanche (later Everett Sinclair's wife) was the oldest child and she was saved by clinging to some limbs and she was found that night. W R, Floyd and Irene were not found until the next day, some miles downstream, although the search went on all night. Blanche's family seems to meet with tragic deaths: her mother Lucy (Drake) Thixton was killed when a car struck her as she was crossing Highway 5, in front of Fortuna Baptist Church, as she was going to a Christmas program. Blanche's son, Norman Sinclair, was 17 years old when he was spraying a chicken house and the lightning struck the spray can in his hands, killing him.
