Clarksburg Baptist Church

From Moniteau County Missouri History 2000 in article submitted by Virginia Bruce:

Clarksburg Baptist Church was established March 26, 1876 by eight charter members, three from Mt Pleasant Baptist Church. These were Rev J B Box, Rev Nicholas Allee and Deacon John Allee. One history lists the first pastor as Rev Allee and another has Rev Box serving. Bro James Lander was elected the first clerk.

From the records:

"We the undersigned Presbytery do hereby certify that James A Lander, Mary A Lander, E T Renshaw, Elizabeth Renshaw, Elizabeth Siegenthaler and E G Renshaw, known to be members of the Baptist Church at Clarksburg, on the fourth Sunday in March, 1876, by the Undersigned Presbytery"

This church was accepted into Concord Baptist Association in 1877. Baptists in Clarksburg first worshiped with Methodist, Christians and Presbyterians in the Union Church, whose building was erected in 1874. Later Baptists built their own church building to house the establishment of Clarksburg Baptist Church in 1876. Another church history dates the dedication of this building as April 1882 with Rev Palmer preaching.

Due to the condition of the church building, a new building was needed by 1909. Lack of funds kept the new building from being dedicated. It was decided to mortgage the building and borrow $900 for material and work. An evangelist, Rev E H Robertson, assisted in raising some money. Rev R E Maiden agreed to dedicate the church but on the day of dedication $400 was still needed. The people responded and the money was raised on the Dedication Day, October 17, 1909. This building, still in use today, cost $2,500.

Clarksburg Baptist Church building, made of soft brick, probably kilned south of town, had two entrances with double doors. Each entered in a cloak room, one on the north and one on the south. A bell tower was over what is the church library today.  After many years of use the bell tower became too heavy for the soft brick and it was necessary to take down the bell tower and beautiful bell in 1965.

Clarksburg Baptist Church has ordained several to the Ministry of our Lord -- W A Bruce in 1900, C B Swiney in 1932, Denzil Albin in 1939 and Roy Dameron in 1963.

A Baptist Young Peoples Union (BYPU) was started in 1902 with 60 members and Sunday School enrollment was 120 that year.

The first Vacation Bible School was held in 1939.

YWA's, GA' and Sunbeam Band were organized about 1950.
